The environmental benefits of using smart meters

Smart meters play a key role in sustainable development and environmental conservation. These devices not only improve the quality of service and help save consumers money, but also make a significant contribution to the protection of nature.

Conceptually, the environmental benefits of smart meters make them not only a useful tool for consumers and companies, but also an important element in the fight against global environmental problems.

Sustainability

Reducing Energy Consumption and Carbon Footprints

Smart meters provide accurate, real-time data on energy consumption, allowing users to be more conscious of their energy use. This in turn leads to lower overall energy consumption and a smaller carbon footprint. More accurate and responsive energy management helps to reduce carbon emissions. For example, Energy Saving Trust research[1]found that households with smart meters reduce electricity consumption by 2.8% and gas consumption by 2%. This results in a corresponding reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

In Uzbekistan, thanks to the Paris Agreement [1] , the World Bank has allocated $46.25 million for a project to reduce greenhouse emissions and access international carbon markets [2] . Experts estimate that this project should help reduce emissions by about 60 million tonnes of CO2 by 2028 [3] . In this regard, the introduction of smart meters in Uzbekistan is a key area of focus.

Optimising Resource Use and Reducing Negative Impacts on the Environment

By collecting and analysing data, smart meters help to use energy resources more efficiently. This ensures a reduction in unnecessary energy consumption and contributes to a more rational allocation of energy resources. Reduced energy consumption results in lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduced load on power plants, which has a positive impact on the environment.

According to a 2022 study [1] , analysing smart meters versus traditional meters, the most significant reduction in impact by smart meters was seen in climate change potential (21%), followed by fossil resource scarcity (19%) and land pollution potential (11%).

Supporting Renewable Energy Sources and Improving Quality of Life

Smart meters facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind farms into the energy grid. This enables more efficient utilisation of renewable energy and reduces dependence on fossil fuels. The share of renewable energy in the global energy mix, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), is set to rise from 29 per cent to 35 per cent by 2025 [2] . This will result in cleaner air, reduced pollution and conservation of natural resources that directly affect human health and well-being.

Moreover, smart meters are not only an environmentally sound solution. The installation of such meters will significantly reduce transport costs and allow to detect problems in the network in advance. For example, Terranova's customer's cash flow increased by 90 per cent after the installation of electronic gas meters.

The use of smart meters is not only a step towards technological progress, but also an important element in an environmental conservation strategy. They not only save resources, but also make our world cleaner and safer. In order to install smart meters in your city - contact a Terranova Central Asia representative.
