World Water Day 2024
On March 22, World Water Day is celebrated. The goal of this observance is precisely to reflect on the importance of water resources and, therefore, to support actions aimed at protecting it and addressing the global water crisis.
One of the main objectives of World Water Day is to achieve water and sanitation for all by 2030.

World Water Day: together towards freshwater resilience
On March 22, 1992, during the Rio Conference, the United Nations established World Water Day to raise awareness among institutions and the public about concrete actions aimed at water sustainability and mitigating the water crisis. The data on the current condition of water resources are enough to answer the question: why is a day like this needed?
Water: A Resource Still in Crisis
Managing integrated water services is currently a responsibility because water resources are as indispensable as they are fragile and at risk. In fact, according to the report released in 2023 by The European House – Ambrosetti, "Water Value for Italy," water consumption is inversely proportional to the progressive decrease in global storage capacity of water basins, linked to their excessive exploitation. Italy not only has a water stress rate exceeding 80% but also remains one of the most water-consuming countries in Europe. The responsibility of water utilities lies, above all, in basing business strategies on sustainable choices that can protect the resource in the long term and raise awareness among end-users. Managing water resources also means managing a complex and articulated system of networks and services for the community, always respecting the prescriptions of regulations. This requires a high level of organization and efficiency, as well as an effective investment plan.
#WaterForPeace
The theme "Water for Peace" promoted by UNESCO aims to reflect on how peace and conflicts between countries depend on the availability and quality of freshwater.
"On this World Day, UNESCO wishes to remind us to what extent water, whose cycle is global, is permanently in conflict with human boundaries. It is up to us to draw the necessary conclusions and see it for what it is: a vital and common good of humanity, which must therefore be considered on the scale of humanity."
Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO
