Acciona chooses Terranova: smart water metering project starts

The Navarra company starts a new water smart metering project with us, which will include the management of almost 19,000 meters and the use of our Meter Data Management and Head-End System. Maximum understanding between two companies whose common goals are digitalisation, innovation and sustainability of processes.

This project marks a new path in the digitisation of water networks in Spain, together with Acciona, one of the most important Spanish companies and one of the most advanced in the field of renewable energies. The project focuses on water smart metering, with the management of almost 19,000 smart meters with LoRaWAN technology, in the territories of Andalusia and Castilla - La Mancha. For us this is, after the one with Nedgia, a fundamental additional step in a country that we know better and better and that we want to support more and more in its fight against water scarcity.

The Company

With the acquisition, in 2004, of the company Energía Hidroeléctrica de Navarra, Acciona made the latter its headquarters for the Energy Division, starting the construction of several water plants in Navarra and, subsequently, expanding its activity towards several new technologies, all in the field of renewable energy. With a total turnover of EUR 4.35 billion and a listing on the Spanish stock exchange, Acciona is one of the most important water companies in the Iberian Peninsula, making innovation and sustainability the two main pillars of its mission and vision.

The need

The ruinous scenarios that have played out in Spain over the last 15 years, with long periods of drought and increasingly depleting water reserves, have forced the entire country to take corrective action, as we have already mentioned elsewhere. Water companies have started their own network digitisation process, starting with smart metering, in order to enhance their metering processes and, consequently, multiply the data at their disposal to manage their business in a more sustainable way. Acciona, too, is not exempt from this path and, thanks to the features of TAMM, our smart metering software, it will be able to exploit the full potential of smart metering and the existing assets in its application map, as well as monitor water flows in the network and more easily identify water leaks. In addition, the Navarra company already started with the desire to build up a heterogeneous meter fleet over time, consisting of different meter brands and models, which needed to be managed with a single platform.

The solution

For Acciona, the agnosticity with respect to the actual meter model used by Terranova's products was decisive in choosing our Meter Data Management and Head-End System and inserting them into a complex architecture with the various third-party software. The Navarra company will now be able to extract data of various kinds (measurements and diagnostics) and send them to management and billing software via Web APIs in a fully automatic and non-manual manner.

In addition, the process of purchasing smart meters in parallel with that of the smart meter platform was not an obstacle for a suite that is capable of handling over 150 makes and models of meters. In this way, Acciona did not need to limit itself in the purchase of smart meters with which to start its digitisation and will be able to evaluate the purchase of any brand of meter in the future, having the certainty that our software will be able to integrate it.

Sustainability

Last but not least, thanks to the system for configuring and managing alarms such as overflow and abnormal consumption, Acciona will be able to have in-depth analysis tools to identify and estimate water losses. This is vital element in a country experiencing the water emergency with great apprehension.

Through this new project, Acciona will be able to benefit from a product that makes digitalisation, innovation and sustainability its most important values, as well as from the in-depth knowledge of the Utilities sector and the Spanish territory of our professionals, whose aim is to bring to light increasingly comprehensive solutions to support water managers in facing the challenges of digital transformation.
