ACCIONA: Smart Metering Success Story in Spain

A new path for the digitisation of water networks in Spain started. ACCIONA has chosen us to initiate a new project, focusing on smart water metering, with the management of almost 19,000 smart meters with LoRaWAN technology, in the territories of Andalusia and Castilla - La Mancha. A fundamental extra step in a country that struggles with water scarcity every day, for a Spanish water management giant.
The context
In 2004, with the acquisition of the company Energía Hidroeléctrica de Navarra, ACCIONA made the latter its headquarters for the Energy Division, starting the construction of several water plants in Navarra and, subsequently, expanding its activities towards several new technologies, all in the field of renewable energy. Since then, ACCIONA leads the water treatment sector through its involvement in the design, construction and operation of drinking water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, reverse osmosis desalination plants and tertiary treatment for water reuse, strengthening the focus on services to cities. The Company implements innovative solutions and applies the latest technologies in water treatment in parallel with the digitalisation of the sector, which it considers essential to bring about more efficient and sustainable water treatment processes.
The ruinous scenarios in Spain over the last 15 years, with long periods of drought, floods and increasingly depleting water reserves, have forced the entire country to take action. For this reason, ACCIONA too, even before many other water companies, has started their network digitisation process, starting with smart metering, in order to enhance the measurement processes and, consequently, multiply the data at their disposal to manage the water resource business in a more sustainable way.
The Project
For ACCIONA, the agnostic nature of the meter model actually used in our products was decisive in choosing our Meter Data Management and Head-End System and integrating them into a complex architecture with various third-party software. Navarra is now able to extract data of various kinds (measurements and diagnostics) and send them to management and billing software via Web APIs in a fully automatic and non-manual manner.
In addition, the process of purchasing smart meters in parallel with that of the smart meter platform was not an obstacle for a suite that is capable of handling over 150 makes and models of meters. In this way, ACCIONA did not need to limit itself in the purchase of the smart meters with which to start its digitisation, and will be able to evaluate the purchase of any brand of meter in the future, having the certainty that our software will be able to integrate it.
